WELCOME TO MELANIE THOREN ARTIST

About Me

A Bendigo local, I have always had a keen interest in the arts. One of my earliest memories is stealing my Mum's printer paper so I could draw!  All the way through primary and secondary school I excelled in the arts scene, frequently being a part of school exhibition events, and even had my works purchased for my school's permanent collections. During this time I I fell in love with the process of creating folios. I always marvel at how many different outcomes can come from one creative stimulus!
I recently completed my Bachelor of Arts (Drama and Visual Arts) and Bachelor of Education at Deakin University in Burwood, and my interest in contemporary art and performance has only grown.

My work also has a focus on feminism inspired by artists such as Hannah Wilke and Cindy Sherman, though I do not consider myself much of a photographer. I refer to this work as 'performance photography' as it often requires me to create a 'persona' in order to find a specific side of a character or image. My work explores identity and place within society, especially for the modern woman. I am also interested in retro aesthetic and often lean towards the surreal or unusual.
