MELANIE THOREN ARTIST

Melanie (she/her) is a Melbourne/Naarm based artist, originally from rural Bendigo. Her work explores the nature of feminine identity within our constantly evolving society. Thoren uses embroidery to question the historical use of textiles as a traditionally ‘female craft’. She particularly enjoys the use of vibrant colours and surrealist elements to make her art satirical, mythological and alien, deliberately contrasting the ‘homely’ and ‘pretty’ aesthetic of traditional needlecrafts. Melanie incorporates elements of retro-futurism into her work, questioning the presence of technology in conjunction with feminine identity. She also explores the use of cyanotypes on fabric, imbuing the power of the Australian sun into her work via UV sensitive dyes. Her work seeks to emphasize the human interactions of art creation, focusing on hand embellishments. She draws inspiration from other feminal artists such as Mirka Mora, Frida Kahlo, Maria Lassnig and Cindy Sherman.
